How one grandmother’s desire to pass Spanish and culture to the next generation inspired Speak2Learn

For Elizabeth “Liz” Miranda, Founder of Speak2Learn.com, Spanish is more than a language. It represents family, culture, connection, and opportunities to communicate with people in a meaningful way.

But Liz’s journey with Spanish also taught her an important lesson: sometimes we do not fully appreciate what we have until we realize how important it is to pass it on.

Growing Up Around Spanish

Growing up in Texas, Liz was surrounded by Spanish and bilingualism. Like many people who grow up hearing another language around them, she took that ability for granted.

When she became a mother, she did not teach her daughter Spanish. Years later, Liz watched her daughter spend years trying to learn the language as an adult because she needed Spanish to communicate with international clients. That experience stayed with her.  

It showed Liz how valuable it can be to introduce a second language early, and how much harder it can feel when we wait until adulthood.

Then Atticus Was Born

The birth of Liz’s grandson, Atticus, changed everything.

Liz knew she wanted him to learn Spanish. But it was not only about teaching him vocabulary or helping him say a few Spanish words.

She wanted him to have an opportunity to connect with the language and the culture behind it.

Liz also realized that if Spanish was going to become a meaningful part of his life, she needed to take an active role in making that happen.  

That realization sent her searching for a better way to teach Spanish.

Finding a More Natural Way to Learn

Liz spent months researching second-language acquisition and exploring how people actually learn to understand and communicate in another language.

Her research brought her back to something surprisingly simple: we do not learn our first language by beginning with worksheets filled with grammar rules and verb conjugations.

We learn by listening, understanding, repeating, interacting, and eventually speaking.

That natural approach became part of the foundation for Speak2Learn.  

Instead of making students feel that they must understand every grammar rule before they can speak, Speak2Learn emphasizes listening, speaking, practical vocabulary, and authentic conversation.  

Why Liz Created Speak2Learn

Liz wanted to create the kind of Spanish-learning experience she wished had been available to her family.

One that felt welcoming rather than intimidating.

One that encouraged students to communicate instead of worrying about speaking perfectly.

And one that helped people see Spanish as something they could actually use in their everyday lives.

Today, Speak2Learn provides online Spanish learning opportunities for children and adults, with conversation and practical communication at the heart of the learning experience.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is to help students understand more, speak more, connect more, and become more confident using Spanish.

More Than Learning a Language

For Liz, Speak2Learn has also become something much more personal.

It represents an opportunity to help families make different choices for the next generation.

It is a reminder that it is never too late to begin learning Spanish, and it is never too early to introduce a child to another language.

And you do not have to speak perfect Spanish for those connections to matter.

Sometimes, a little Spanish can be the beginning of something much bigger.
